30 years in the business, and I still haven’t a clue what I’m doing …
As the title says, I’ve been working professionally drawing comics since 1980. Over that time I’ve been lucky enough to have had the chance to work on some terrific characters – Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper for 2000AD in the UK, Blueberry in France, and a variety of series for DC, Wildstorm and Dark Horse in the States.
Spandex is not my thing, but I’ve been lucky enough to keep myself busy working with writers I admire, on work that I personally enjoy. Recently I’ve also had the chance to work again in France, which, since I discovered European “BD” back in the ’70’s, has been where my heart lies. The quality and variety of European comics continues to amaze me, and while the sales figures for US comics continues to decline, and the “franchise” model gains an even stronger hold over there, the French industry continues to expand. Perhaps a little too much according to some, but I still feel surprised and privileged to find work in France after all these years away.
With Comic Conventions and Commissions becoming more frequent, my collection of previously unpublished sketches and illustrations has begun to mount up, and so in 2010 I published my first sketchbook, followed by #2 two years later. Dedicaces #1 & #2 (French for dedications, but the term usually used for artist’s sketches) each contain about 35 of my illustrations.
